What is the explosion limit for the leakage of ethylene gas? What are the key steps in on-site emergency response?

The explosion limit of ethylene leakage is usually 2.7% - 36% (by volume). This means that when the concentration of ethylene in the air is within this range, encountering open flames, high heat, or other ignition sources may cause an explosion.

The key steps for emergency response at the scene of ethylene leakage are as follows:

1. Alarm and activation of emergency response: Once ethylene leakage is detected, immediately notify on-site managers, safety personnel, and activate the emergency response plan. Also, call the fire department and describe the location of the leakage, the substance involved, etc.

2. Personnel evacuation: Quickly organize personnel at the scene and in the surrounding areas to evacuate in the direction of the wind to a safe area. Designate a person in charge of evacuation to ensure a rapid evacuation and prevent personnel from inhaling the leaked ethylene gas, which could cause asphyxiation or other injuries.

3. Leak source control: Quickly close the valves near the leak source to stop the continuous leakage of ethylene. If the valves cannot be closed, use leak sealing tools or materials to temporarily seal the leak point. Alternatively, guide the leaked ethylene to a safe area, such as a flare system, to prevent it from directly contacting fire sources or other hazardous sources.

4. Setting up a warning zone: Based on the leakage volume and diffusion range, set up a warning zone around the leakage site. Prohibit irrelevant personnel from entering to prevent the spread of the leaked ethylene to other areas and avoid causing danger. Also, control the traffic around the site and guide rescue vehicles to enter smoothly.

5. Environmental monitoring: Use gas detection equipment, such as gas analyzers, to monitor the concentration of ethylene in the leakage area and the surrounding environment in real time. Determine the diffusion range and potential affected areas to provide a basis for subsequent disposal.

6. Fire suppression and explosion prevention: If the leakage causes a fire, select the appropriate fire extinguishing agent based on the fire situation, such as dry powder, foam, or carbon dioxide, for extinguishing. At the same time, prevent re-ignition and secondary explosions, ensure the fire source is completely extinguished, remove combustible materials from the site, strengthen ventilation, and reduce the concentration of flammable gases.

7. Site cleanup and restoration: Under the condition of ensuring safety, clean up the leakage site, remove any burning residues and other debris. Repair or replace damaged equipment, monitor the air, water quality, etc. around the site to ensure environmental safety, and gradually resume production activities.
