1、Physical properties
Propane is a light hydrocarbon with a molecular formula of C3H8 and a molecular weight of 44.1.
Its boiling point at standard atmospheric pressure is-42.1°C and its melting point is-187.6°C.
Propane has a lower density than air,so it rises and diffuses in the air.
Safety and environmental friendliness:Propane only produces water and carbon dioxide during combustion, making it a clean energy source that does not cause pollution to the environment. However, safety precautions should still be taken during use, avoiding high temperatures and impacts, ensuring good ventilation, and keeping away from flammable substances to prevent the risk of fire and explosion.
2、Propane source
Propane exists in petroleum gas, natural gas, coke oven gas,and petroleum cracking gas,and is obtained through separation.
(1) From oil field gas separation, oil field gas or natural gas contains not only methane, but also small amounts of ethane, propane,or other hydrocarbons with more carbon atoms. The liquid phase obtained by cryogenic separation of natural gas is composed of ethane and propane.A mixture of light hydrocarbons with butane as the main component, whose composition is related to the source of natural gas, separation and processing temperature, and pressure conditions. The typical composition(P)is:ethane 37.6%,propane 35.9%,butane 11.6%,isobutane 3.9%,n-pentane 3.1%,and others 7.9%.
(2) Separation of refinery gas from petroleum processing gases in various refineries not only contains methane, but also ethane, propane,as well as C4 and C5 hydrocarbons.Through separation, propane can be obtained.
(3) Propane can be separated from cracking gas using cryogenic method.
3、Main purpose
Fuel:Propane is a common fuel commonly used in places such as barbecue, portable stoves, motor vehicles, industrial combustion equipment, industrial kilns, industrial vehicles, and industrial ships. It can also be used together with butane to produce liquefied petroleum gas for civilian fuel.
Chemical raw materials:Propane has various applications in the chemical industry. It can be used to produce ethylene and propylene, and is an important raw material for cracking to produce ethylene. In addition, propane can also be used to produce chemicals such as acrylonitrile, nitropropane, and vinyl chloride.Propane is commonly used as a solvent for deasphalting and desulfurization in refineries.
Other applications:Propane is also used as a refrigerant, steam cracking equipment, flamethrower, air gun propellant, and to create visual effects such as explosions and flames in theme parks and film productions.
